Early Years Foundation Stage
"Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn." - F Donaldson
At Regina Coeli we aim to give every child the best possible education and we believe children learn best in a secure, stimulating and engaging environment. Our curriculum is delivered through a combination of whole class activities, adult led focused activities and child initiated activities, both indoors and outdoors. The curriculum in Reception follows and builds on children’s experiences at nursery. There are seven areas of learning and development that carefully shape our learning in the Early Years. The Prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and for building their capacity to learn. These areas are Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The four specific areas (Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Art & Design) build on the skills developed in the Prime areas to provide a holistic learning experience for every child. The ways in which a child engages with other people and their environment – playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically – underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner. We believe the quality of the conversations they have with adults and peers throughout the day in a language-rich environment is crucial. Through story-telling and role play, children share their ideas with support and modelling from their teacher, they become comfortable using a rich range of vocabulary and develop their language structures. Each half term our learning links to a core text and an overall theme. We provide opportunities for children to ask questions so they know more and remember more as they progress through the year and prepare for Year 1.
To support our children in building a firm mathematical foundation the NCETM link will provide guidance to partents. This will enable parents to become familiar with how maths is taught and also give ideas on ways to encourage mathematical thinking at home.
