Maths
"Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers." - Shakuntala Devi
At Regina Coeli we intend to develop mathematical learning behaviours so that pupils focus and engage fully as learners who reason and seek to make connections.
We use a mastery approach in Maths, which enables all pupils to develop a deep understanding rather than memorising key concepts. Starting in the Early Years, we believe children should be able to count confidently, develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. Pupils have frequent and varied opportunities to build and apply this understanding, such as using manipulatives, including small pebbles and tens frames for organising counting, children will develop a secure base of knowledge and vocabulary from which mastery of mathematics is built. Our curriculum each year starts by focussing on providing children with a strong foundation of place value, which underpins many areas within maths. We ensure work is presented to students with context and real word applications. Through the Mastery approach, we aim to ensure that all pupils have mastered key concepts before moving on to the next topic. We revisit these concepts each year, lesson design links to prior learning to ensure access for all through carefully planned steps of progression. Pupils also have access to ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’ to ensure they are able to move confidently through their times tables and apply these skills to a variety of different areas of mathematics. Through this approach, our students become successful learners who are confident mathematicians and enjoy the subject.
