Design and Technology
“D&T gives children the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work” – Design and Technology Association.
At Regina Coeli we encourage creativity, enquiry and imagination through our Design and Technology curriculum. Central to each unit of work pupils understand the iterative cycle of the design, make and evaluate process with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in the context of building structures, cooking and nutrition, mechanisms and textiles. In the Early Years, our pupils are encouraged to ask questions, investigate and use a variety of materials, tools, and products, developing their first-hand experience in handling appropriate tools and construction material safely. They do this with increasing control as they engage in the making process. All units of work are presented as a scenario or contextual problem for pupils to consider the intent, user, design brief and criteria required for their products. Our curriculum maps pupils’ progression of skills and knowledge so that each encounter builds on prior learning and there is opportunity to develop new skills. Over time, pupils develop a more rigorous understanding of design and construction in order to evaluate and adapt their creations. In years 1-6 the curriculum provides a range of experiences that encourage exploration, observation, problem solving, critical thinking and discussion. At Regina Coeli, we feel that developing critical thinking makes an essential contribution to creativity.
