Computing
“Computer science empowers students to create the world of tomorrow.” - Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft
At Regina Coeli we want to help our pupils to become independent, creative, safe, respectful and problem-solving digital citizens with a broad and transferrable skillset. We use iLearn2 as a curriculum programme to support us in meeting this aim. iLearn2 makes computing fun and accessible for pupils, inspiring them to develop skills beyond the classroom and building an awareness of all the opportunities the subject provides. Each of our units of work meets the national curriculum programmes of study for Key Stage 1 and 2 and we ensure that we learn computing skills from the three recognised aspects of computing - computer science, information technology and digital literacy - within each year of their primary education. This means that pupils will build upon skills and concepts they established from the previous year and develop them further in their future encounters. Woven through each unit of work is the teaching of how to stay safe and behave online. We aim for our curriculum to be a pathway that supports our pupils in being confident to recognise the differences between acceptable and unacceptable online behaviour and how to approach this, including where they can go for help and support when they have concerns about content and contact. In Year 5 our pupils benefit from the local links we have with Whitgift School where they spend a week immersed in an enrichment curriculum offer that focuses on computing. We offer Code Club as an extra-curricular activity where our pupils are able to engage with code through the Micro:bit devices. These accessible devices make computing inspiring, fun and meaningful for beginners and experienced coders through endless opportunities to engage students with real-world technology.
