Autumn 2017

Welcome to St. Maria's Class page!

During this half term, our R.E. topic is 'Jesus' Family' which we will study during each week through the 'Come and See' scheme. In English, we will be looking at stories with a historical setting. Planning and writing will at times be linked to our History topic, which we are very excited about this term: The Tudors. Maths will include working on Place Value and the Four Ooperations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We begin our Science topic on Sound. On Tuesdays, the children will have the opportunity, as a class, to learn to play either the violin or the cello as well as learning to read music, which is a fantastic opportunity!  They will also learn to speak Spanish through song with Mrs Carini. P.E. is on a Wednesday and a Thursday-please make sure your child has their named kit in school. Whole school liturgies are held regularly on Thursdays. There is a Y4 Mass scheduled for this term to which parents are most warmly invited. Details to follow.

Homework:  We have very high expectations of school work  eg the presentation and the content. We expect the same quality in the homework sent home, which your children are aware of.

Maths-this is sent home daily which usually reinforces the learning that day. Any problems can be discussed and remedied the next morning during 'Early Work'. (8.30-9.00am).

English-pupils learn their spellings and write 3 sentences per night using their spellings. These should include high quality sentence openers and mid-sentence conjunctions to extend the sentence. Pupils use these in their writing at school.

Daily reading of 15 minutes + is for enjoyment and also helps the children to write more sophisticated, detailed sentences. Please ask your child about what they have read to establish understanding.

Times tables learning - pupils are given specific tables to write out and learn. (When pupils can recall tables in any order, they have become secure in the times table!)  The children continue to work extremely hard on learning tables in school and at home, which is evident in their daily maths work. So well done to all concerned!

St.Maria's class will be swimming on Wednesday afternoons AFTER half term. Please remember both swim hat and goggles!

With best wishes,

Mrs Gorynski, Mrs Chessa and Mrs Ferguson
