27th November 2017

In English this week the children will be continuing their work on Uganda. This is linked to our geography topic of comparing the United Kingdom to Uganda. The children will learn about schools, animals, food and housing. The children will create a fact file based on the animals they have researched. They will cook plantain and then write instructions on how they did it - learning imperative verbs, the features of non-fiction etc.

In maths this week we are continuing to use the Bus Frame. This week the focus is on missing numbers. This is a very tricky concept for children to understand. They will use the counters practically at first to solve problems involving subtraction and by the end of the week they will move on to solving the problems and record their answers. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

In RE we are beginning our journey of Advent - by learning about waiting for something. They will then write an Advent promise.

20th November 2017

In English this week the children will be learning about Uganda. We will have a visitor dressed in traditional clothing. The children will have the opportunity to ask questions. This is linked to our geography topic of comparing the United Kingdom to Uganda. The children will learn about education, housing and diet in Uganda.

In maths this week we are continuing our work on subtraction using the Bus Frame. This week the focus is on missing numbers. This is a very tricky concept for children to understand. 13th November 2017

In English this week the children will be linking their learning through our RE week of Judaism. The children will listen to the story of Abraham and Moses. They will look at what makes a good leader. The children will looking at showing respect to other faiths.

In maths this week we are continuing our work on the Bus Frame. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

6th November 2017

In English this week the children will be looking toys. This is our History topic. The children will at how toys have changed over a period of time. They will look at what their parents and grandparents received as presents. The children will look what they are made of. By the end of the week they will compare these toys – noting any similarities and differences.

In RE this week the children will finish off their learning on Baptism and we will look at what they have understood about Baptism over the course of 4 weeks.

30th October 2017

In English this week the children will be looking at poems based around fireworks. They will be encouraged to use adjectives to describe what they can hear, see, smell and feel when describing fireworks. The children will then use these adjectives to write sentences. They will also be writing their own acrostic poems.

In RE this week the children will continue to learn about Baptism. They will create their own Baptism candle. At the end of the week they will write their own Baptism prayer and write down important words that the priest uses during the ceremony.

In maths this week we are using the part part whole method and number cards to add 2 numbers together.  The children will then begin to record their number sentences on whiteboards before moving onto recording in their books. This will enable the children to then move on to filling in the missing number. They will then begin to carry on – using jumps – instead of starting at 1 again. By the end of the week the children will be confident in this method.

16th October 2017

This week is maths week for the whole school. The children will be working through various problems involving always, sometimes and never. They will watch a story to set the scene. The children will be encouraged their thinking. At the end of the week the children will take part in a celebration assembly to share their work of the week.
The children will continue their work on learning about Baptism. In class the children will conduct a Baptism, this will allow them to understand what goes on during this ceremony.

9th October 2017

 In English we are continuing our writing based on Autumn. As the weather is changing, we will be discussing with the children the change in temperature / weather / seasonal changes etc. The children will be going on a walk around the local area where they will complete an “I spy sheet” – with pictures the children have to spot; for example conkers, brown leaves, acorns etc. This will enable the children to use this knowledge to complete a story map of their walk. Following on from this the children will then begin to form simple sentences – including previous learning of adjectives and the conjunction “and”. This will allow the children to then recall a recount of their walk.

In RE we are starting our new topic of belonging. This will include asking the children which groups they belong to. This can include in and out of school, and also church groups.

In Maths this week the children will be learning the part part whole method. This will be done practically first – using the PPW frame and counters. This will allow the children to explore different ways to make 5 – 4+1 3+2 etc. By the end of the week the children will be working independently writing the correct number stories.

Please continue to read with your child every night. As we said at the parent meeting it is very important to have a discussion with your child around the book. When your child reads they should be able to read fluently and clearly. This is vital before your child can move onto a different reading stage.

2nd  October 2017

In English we are still looking at non-fiction.  The children will finish their learning on animals by creating a fact file. They will use the information they gained from the animal magic visit. The children will also be working on using the conjunction “and”. We will explain that conjunctions are used to join 2 sentences together to make 1 sentence. This will start off by using handy and – where the children will read the 2 sentences – then remove the full stop and include “and” and then verbally read the sentence to their LP. This will be followed by the children writing their own sentences that include the conjunction “and”.

In RE, as it is October, the children will start going to Rosary first thing in the morning. We will be learning about the meaning of the Rosary and the different prayers that we say. The children are encouraged to bring in their own Rosary.

In Maths this week the children will be learning which numbers are odd and which numbers are even. They will explain their thinking and show examples using drawings. We are also looking at ordinal numbers – for the children to understand 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.

25th September 2017

In English we are looking at non-fiction.  The children will look at the features of non-fiction including captions / headings/ contents page / photographs etc. The children will also be enjoying a visit from animal magic where they will see a variety of animals. This will engage the children and encourage their descriptive language in cross curricular writing in science– adjectives.

In RE the children will be continuing our work on families. This week we will look at the Holy Family and read the prayer. They will read Psalms and write their own. The children will also read the story of Jesus lost in the temple.

In Maths this week the children will be continuing their work on 1 more / 1 less than of a variety of numbers using concrete apparatus, then moving onto written work. The children will reinforce the correct language for the week.

18th September 2017 

In English we are continuing to read the book "Billy's Bucket". We are continuing to reinforce adjectives.This week we will be recounting the story ensuring the children use correct sentence structure and adjectives. The children will also be making a list of the objects in the bucket.

In RE the children will be continuing our work on families. This week we will looking at Psalms and the children will be writing their own Psalm.

In Maths this week the children will be looking at 1 more / 1 less than and the same as. The children will use this language to compare a set of numbers.

11th September 2017 

In English we are reading the book "Billy's Bucket". The children will listen to the story, discussing the role of the author, title, illustrator, blurb, change of font etc. They will retell the story to their LP using puppets and the correct story language. The children will sequence the story - putting the creatures in the correct order. They will be introduced to adjectives and begin to include an adjective when describing what was in Billy's Bucket. This will lead the children onto writing a sentence about what was in Billy's Bucket - including a capital letter, full stop, finger spaces and an adjective. We will also have a creativity day - where the childrenw will enjoy a variety of activities based around the book.

In RE the children will be learning about families. They will learn what a fmaily is - including who they live with at home and God's family. The children will share how we show people we love them and care about them. 

In Maths this week the children will be looking at place value. They will count objects and record the number. The children will be identifying missing numbers.
