 19th February 2018

English/History

The children have a very exciting couple of weeks as we are learning all about the Great Fire of London. They will start the week off telling us what they know if anything. The children will then look at pictures and discuss what they think is happening? Why? What are the clues in the pictures? The children will be using Historical language throughout this topic.

Maths

This week the children are looking at 1 / 10 less than and 1/10 more than. The children are revisiting and consolidating their learning. This time they will using a 100 square with numbers missing. The children will also explain how they know using the explanation sentence “ I know that……”

RE

We are continuing our topic of meals. The children will write about a special meal they have had. They will explain what the special meal was for, who was there and how they felt about it.

Science

This week in materials we are carrying out an experiment. The children will have to make a prediction and complete the experiment – which is the most suitable material to keep the pig safe from the wolf.

 

5th February 2018

This week is book week and our story is Snow White and the seven Dwarves.

English

The children will learn about different fairy tales. They will listen to the story and then retell it to their learning partner. The children will then create a story map sequencing the story using the correct story language.

Maths

As it is book week we will be doing maths through the fairy tale.

The children will also be solving word problems.

RE

We are continuing our topic of meals. The children will write about a special meal they have had. They will explain what the special meal was for, who was there and how they felt about it.

Science

This week in materials we are carrying out an experiment. The children will have to make a prediction and complete the experiment – which is the most suitable material to keep the pig safe from the wolf.

 

29th January 2018

We will be continuing with our learning on the Artic. The children are really enjoying this topic.  They will continue to research this topic through a variety of means.

English

The children will be finishing our booklet their on the Arctic. This will include the people that live there and the landscape.

We will be continuing our phonics weekly as usual.

Maths

This week will be reinforcing our learning thorough the use dienes. The children will be solving maths word problems using jottings. They will record their number sentences and begin to find ways to check their answers.

RE

We are starting our new topic of meals. The children will begin by explaining what they know about meals – what meals do they have, with whom, when etc.

Science

 We are continuing our topic of materials. The children will go on a scavenger hunt and find objects made of a variety of different materials.

 

22nd January 2018

This week in computing we will be continuing our learning about e-mail.  The children are incredibly excited have sent some very thoughtful questions to Nick Cox, an arctic researcher.  On Tuesday afternoon the children will be discussing e-safety in regards to opening e-mails from people we are expecting them from and reading the answers Nick has sent.  They will then be practising typing their own up e-mail addresses for animals in the Arctic using the @ sign.

English

The children will be continuing their work on the Arctic. This week we will be planning a postcard - looking at their features and then write the postcard up. They will also be continuing their Arctic booklet. 

We will be continuing our phonics weekly as usual.

Maths

This week will be continuing to use dienes to support our learning. The children will be working on 10  less by recording their learning through jottings. The children will express this through addition - 10 less than 22 ( 22 - 10 = )

RE

We are continuing our new topic of special people. This week the children will listen to the story of Jesus lost in the Temple. They will sequence the story by using key vocabulary and recount it into their books.

 

15th January 2018

English

This half term the children will be learning about all areas of the Arctic. This week we are starting to create an information booklet based on the Arctic. The children will look at the features of an information book - captions, pictures, headings etc. This will carried on over several lessons.

We will be continuing our phonics weekly as usual.

Maths

This week will be continuing to use dienes to support our learning. The children will be working on 10 more and 10 less by recording their learning through jottings. The children will express this through addition - 10 more than 12 ( 12 + 10 = )

RE

We are continuing our new topic of special people. This week the children will listen to the story of the Presentation in the temple. They will sequence the story by using key vocabulary and recount it into their books.

 

8th January 2018

English

This half term the children will be learning about all areas of the Arctic. We will be looking at weather conditions, the different animals that live there, the people who love there and where it is in relation to us and the Equator. All our writing will be done through this topic.

We will be continuing our phonics weekly as usual.

Maths

This week will be continuing to use dienes to support our learning. The children will be working on 10 more and 10 less - first using practical apparatus and then moving onto recording their learning through jottings. This will enable the children to solve problems once their learning is consoldated.

RE

We are beginning our new topic of special people. This week the children will tell us about the special people they know and what makes them special.

 

Computing

This half term the children will be incorporating their Computing with their wider learning about the Arctic.  They will be learning about email - what it is, why we use it and how to be safe using it.  The children will work collaboratively to send a class e-mail to Nick Cox, the leader of the Arctic research team at Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen.  They will be generating and asking him questions and replying to his answers which will be used in their writing and science work.

This week we will focus on What e-mail is, Why we use it and what email address look like so we can recognise them.  We will also have a look at the NERC website which is can be found here.

 

27th November 2017

In English this week the children will be continuing their work on Uganda. This is linked to our geography topic of comparing the United Kingdom to Uganda. The children will learn about schools, animals, food and housing. The children will create a fact file based on the animals they have researched. They will cook plantain and then write instructions on how they did it - learning imperative verbs, the features of non-fiction etc.

In maths this week we are continuing to use the Bus Frame. This week the focus is on missing numbers. This is a very tricky concept for children to understand. They will use the counters practically at first to solve problems involving subtraction and by the end of the week they will move on to solving the problems and record their answers. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

In RE we are beginning our journey of Advent - by learning about waiting for something. They will then write an Advent promise.

20th November 2017

In English this week the children will be learning about Uganda. We will have a visitor dressed in traditional clothing. The children will have the opportunity to ask questions. This is linked to our geography topic of comparing the United Kingdom to Uganda. The children will learn about education, housing and diet in Uganda.

In maths this week we are continuing our work on subtraction using the Bus Frame. This week the focus is on missing numbers. This is a very tricky concept for children to understand. They will use the counters practically at first to solve problems involving subtraction and by the end of the week they will move on to solving the problems and record their answers. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

13th November 2017

In English this week the children will be linking their learning through our RE week of Judaism. The children will listen to the story of Abraham and Moses. They will look at what makes a good leader. The children will looking at showing respect to other faiths.

They will use the counters practically at first to solve problems involving subtraction and by the end of the week they will move on to solving the problems and record their answers. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

6th November 2017

In English this week the children will be looking toys. This is our History topic. The children will at how toys have changed over a period of time. They will look at what their parents and grandparents received as presents. The children will look what they are made of. By the end of the week they will compare these toys – noting any similarities and differences.

In RE this week the children will finish off their learning on Baptism and we will look at what they have understood about Baptism over the course of 4 weeks.

In maths this week we are introducing the children to the Bus Frame. They will use the counters practically at first to solve problems and by the end of the week they will move on to solving the problems and record their answers. The children will need to explain their thinking all week as this is an important part of their learning.

30th October 2017

In English this week the children will be looking at poems based around fireworks. They will be encouraged to use adjectives to describe what they can hear, see, smell and feel when describing fireworks. The children will then use these adjectives to write sentences. They will also be writing their own acrostic poems.

In RE this week the children will continue to learn about Baptism. They will create their own Baptism candle. At the end of the week they will write their own Baptism prayer and write down important words that the priest uses during the ceremony.

In maths this week we are using the part part whole method and number cards to add 2 numbers together.  The children will then begin to record their number sentences on whiteboards before moving onto recording in their books. This will enable the children to then move on to filling in the missing number. They will then begin to carry on – using jumps – instead of starting at 1 again. By the end of the week the children will be confident in this method.

16th October 2017

This week is maths week for the whole school. The children will be working through various problems involving always, sometimes and never. They will watch a story to set the scene. The children will be encouraged their thinking. At the end of the week the children will take part in a celebration assembly to share their work of the week.
The children will continue their work on learning about Baptism. In class the children will conduct a Baptism, this will allow them to understand what goes on during this ceremony.

9th October 2017

 In English we are continuing our writing based on Autumn. As the weather is changing, we will be discussing with the children the change in temperature / weather / seasonal changes etc. The children will be going on a walk around the local area where they will complete an “I spy sheet” – with pictures the children have to spot; for example conkers, brown leaves, acorns etc. This will enable the children to use this knowledge to complete a story map of their walk. Following on from this the children will then begin to form simple sentences – including previous learning of adjectives and the conjunction “and”. This will allow the children to then recall a recount of their walk.

In RE we are starting our new topic of belonging. This will include asking the children which groups they belong to. This can include in and out of school, and also church groups.

In Maths this week the children will be learning the part part whole method. This will be done practically first – using the PPW frame and counters. This will allow the children to explore different ways to make 5 – 4+1 3+2 etc. By the end of the week the children will be working independently writing the correct number stories.
