Art and Design
“Creativity takes courage” - Henry Matisse
Art and Design at Regina Coeli is an opportunity for our pupils to identify art, craft and design as a form of expression and creativity; a mechanism for celebration and expression of uniqueness and difference; a reflection of character, opinion and emotion. It provides engagement, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiement, invent and create. Pupils are encouraged to view art as a means of expression and communication and building our pupils’ vocabulary to support their articulation and appreciation of art is woven through lesson sequences. Pupils learn to communicate what they see, feel and think when evaluating and analysing creative works using the language of art, craft and design. Art knowledge is emphasised to ensure that they have strong foundations to experiement and take risks, in each unit pupils will study one or more of the 7 elements of art. Additionally, each unit of work has an artist in focus from across the world so that through the study of these great artists, craft makers and designers they know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture through the study of their work. We understand the importance of prior knowledge of skills and techniques being practised and revisited so pupils become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and printing so we plan for progression across the school for each of these strands of the curriculum. Pupils at Regin Coeli take pride in their art works. Their sketchbooks that stay with them as a marker of their study and journey through the curriculum.
